Even if Avatar: The Way of the Water broke everything at the international box office, the eyes of James Cameron and Disney are already turning to the continuation of the franchise, called to know five films (or even more) officially. And if we had to wait almost 13 years between the first two films, Avatar 3 was shot in the wake of 2 and will be released in December 2024 in our dark rooms. But, for a few months, rumors evoke a director’s cut version of James Cameron which could last nearly nine hours and would therefore not be broadcast in cinemas, even if Disney does not intend to nip it in the bud. Indeed, the American firm would rather plan to broadcast the long version on Disney +, cut into a mini-series of several episodes. In any case, this is the theory of film critics from the podcast The Hot Mic, who also argue that James Cameron and his teams have already completed all the special effects on Avatar 3. The will of a studio or d a director to transpose a long film in series on a streaming platform is not very surprising. Zack Snyder and HBO Max had thought about it for Snyder’s cut of Justice League, as did Quentin Tarantino to release the many unused rushes of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. If the plot of Avatar 3 remains mysterious enough, we already know that James Cameron intends to introduce a new tribe of Na’vi. It will be the “Ash people”, a people linked to the element of fire but also known for the darkness they contain within them, unlike Jake and his friends. As a reminder, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are also planned for the next few years, respectively in December 2026 and December 2028. See also on Konbini
