Each year, the international press rewards the best French films during the Lumières ceremony, organized by the eponymous academy which opens the season of awards in France, like the Golden Globes in the United States. The year 2021 had been that of the celebration of French cinema, rewarded at the two most prestigious festivals, Cannes and the Mostra, which crowned Julia Ducournau and Audrey Diwan respectively. The best films of 2021 according to the editorial staff of Konbini The director of The Event was once again celebrated by the jury made up of 95 voters, international press correspondents from 36 countries; and won the ceremony’s highest accolade, Best Picture, while its lead actress, Anamaria Vartolomei, won Best Actress. The rest of the awards honor the richness and diversity of French cinema this year. The UFO Annette thus won three trophies, those for Best Direction, Best Image and Best Music, while Xavier Giannoli won the for Best Screenplay for its excellent adaptation of Balzac’s Lost Illusions. Agathe Rousselle was the Female Revelation of the Year for the foreign press, while Thimotée Robart, who enchants Les Magnétiques, was awarded Male Revelation.
