A huge French public success, the popularity of Intouchables has made people envious. With nearly 20 million admissions in France, the second biggest success in history at the French box office behind Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, the most profitable French film in history and the biggest success of all time at the global box office for a non-English language film, Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache’s film attracted covetousness. In 2017, the Americans therefore launched The Upside, their home remake directed by Neil Burger, with Bryan Cranston in the role of Phillip, the wealthy quadriplegic played by François Cluzet in the French version, and Kevin Hart in the role of his helper, Dell, played by Omar Sy in the original film and which will popularize the French actor. If the remake met with public success and garnered $125 million at the box office, the critical reception was much more mixed across the Atlantic. The film was notably called “preaching, manipulative and filled with clichés” and the choice of Bryan Cranston to play the role of a disabled adult was also strongly criticized. But its good results at the box office were enough to motivate the team to launch production on a sequel, according to Bryan Cranston who revealed the information of the establishment of a sequel to the microphone of the podcast Club Random by Bill Maher, reported by Variety. “We are definitely doing a sequel,” confirmed the actor, who will reprise his role alongside Kevin Hart.
