More than twenty years after its theatrical release, Matrix will return to the front of the stage (literally) with a project that no one saw coming. According to Variety, Danny Boyle himself will direct a dancing ballet adaptation of the Wachowski sisters’ first film, a colorful spectacle described as “spectacular and immersive”. The piece in question, baptized Free Your Mind in reference to a cult dialogue between Morpheus and Neo, will notably incorporate hip-hop choreographies through a hundred male and female dancers who “will take over the stage with a collective energy”. England. Thus, Free Your Mind will begin its performances in October 2023 in The Factory, a cultural space under construction in Manchester. Beyond his eclectic filmography (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 days later, 127 hours), Danny Boyle is a specialist in offbeat, even slightly crazy projects, such as the very danceable staging of the opening of the Olympic Games in London in 2012 and that of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Daniel Craig in the short film Happy and Glorious inspired by the James Bond saga. A priori, the Wachowski sisters will not work on this adaptation project, but the British director is surrounded by good people. He can count on the artist Mikey J to compose the music for the piece and on Kenrick Sandy, aka H20, to create the choreography. Finally, the poetess Sabrina Mahfouz and the scenographer Es Devlin will be respectively in charge of the script and the construction of the sets. Until then, we can only advise you to (re)watch the Matrix saga, available from us on Prime Video .
