We didn’t see that one coming. Last June, an article from Deadline informed us that the Oscars had offered Chris Rock to present the 2023 edition of the most famous of cinematographic ceremonies and that the latter would have declined, barely a few weeks after the now infamous incident of the slap from Will Smith. This one, who had not given any comment until then, confirmed it this Sunday, August 28, on the boards of the Arizona Financial Theater: the Academy made him this offer, that he actually refused. Adding in passing, still according to Deadline, that he was also offered to do an advertisement for the Super Bowl, linked to the slap, therefore. In short, Chris Rock had already presented the Oscars, in 2005 and 2016. This proposal is therefore not illogical. But asking him while the incident is still fresh in everyone’s mind is awkward at best and bafflingly cynical at worst.
