While the 94th Academy Awards began under classic auspices, it took an unusual turn when the Oscar for Best Documentary was presented by Chris Rock. After a misplaced valve on the shaved head of Jada Pinkett Smith, her husband, Will Smith, stood up, exasperated, and slapped the comedian before yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth. !”, leaving the audience in confusion. A little later in the evening, the actor returned to the stage, calmed but very moved, to receive the Best Actor statuette for the role of Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in The Williams Method. He took advantage of his presence on stage to apologize and tried to justify his gesture with a parallel with his on-screen character. Other highlights of the evening were the six technical Oscars won by Dune, including Best soundtrack for Hans Zimmer, who won his second Oscar after that received for The Lion King in 1995, as well as the triumph of Coda, the American remake of The Aries Family, which won three statuettes: Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Troy Kotsur, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film. Also note that Apple TV won the Oscar for Best Film, against Netflix.
