French actor Tahar Rahim, known for his roles in A Prophet or Designated Guilty, will chair the 48th edition of the Césars which will take place on February 24 at the Olympia, the organizers announced on Thursday. In a joint press release, the Académie des César and Canal+ praise an actor who “has led his career with finesse, moving towards rich, diverse and complex characters, and new experiences”. Tahar Rahim, 41, was revealed to the public in 2009 in A Prophet by Jacques Audiard where he played the leading role, that of an inmate. This intense drama won the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix and nine Césars, including Best Male Newcomer and Best Actor for Tahar Rahim. In 2013, he was back in competition at Cannes with Le Passé by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi and Grand Central by French director Rebecca Zlotowski. In 2021, he was a member of the Cannes Film Festival jury under the leadership of the American Spike Lee. He was also seen on Netflix in the series The Eddy, with his wife, actress Leïla Bekhti, then was the first role in the hit Netflix series The Serpent, where he plays the French killer Charles Sobhraj, before being nominated for the Golden Globes and the Bafta for Designated Guilty, where he shared the poster with the American Jodie Foster.Monday, the Académie des César announced its decision to withdraw, for its next ceremony, the people implicated “for acts of violence”, in the wake of the Sofiane Bennacer affair, a young actor revealed in Les Amandiers indicted for rape.
