After several years of absence, Scream, the cult horror franchise created by Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven in the 1990s, finally made a triumphant return in 2022. In the midst of a pandemic, Scream V has nevertheless managed to become the one of the highest-grossing slashers of all time, grossing over $140 million in worldwide box office earnings. Three weeks later, Paramount was convinced of the revival of the saga and ordered the production of a sixth opus, of which we finally have the first images with a promising trailer. This time, the cult slasher takes a different turn with some major program changes. First, fans will have to bid farewell to the franchise’s iconic fictional town of Woodsboro, as the murders will now take place in New York City. Then, and for the first time in the saga, Neve Campbell, alias Sidney Prescott, main heroine of the films since the first opus, will not return. Let Scream fans be reassured, however, there will be many familiar faces in this sixth installment, since we will find Courteney Cox, aka Gale Weathers, but also Hayden Panettiere, the interpreter of Kirby Reed, whose last appearance in the franchise dates back to Scream IV. The story of Scream VI is set shortly after the final Ghostface murders in Woodsboro. To rebuild themselves, Sam and Tara, the Carpenter sisters played respectively by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega (who exploded with the success of the Wednesday series on Netflix), move to New York. But a new killer hidden under the ghostly mask appears in the Big Apple to hunt them down again and rekindle the traumas linked to the murders of the previous chapters. Who is hiding under the mask of this new Ghostface and above all, why does he devote an almost sacred cult to former killers? Answers in our dark rooms from March 8, 2023.
