Independent studios A24 (Midsommar, The Lighthouse, The Greenhouse) enter the world of animation and unveil the trailer for their first animated production, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, a mockumentary that documents the emancipation story of a small anthropomorphic seashell to conquer the world. The endearing character of Marcel was developed by Jenny Slate and her ex-husband and creative partner, Dean Fleischer-Camp, through three short films and two children’s albums, L he stand-up comedian and Saturday Night Live alum is best known for playing the infuriating Mona-Lisa Saperstein on the excellent NBC series Parks and Recreation. She has also already collaborated with A24 studios, which produced Obvious Child, an excellent comedy that played down the issue of abortion without trivializing it, which she was top of the bill for. Rather than watching Unplanned on C8, prefer Obvious ChildMixing live action and traditional animation, Marcel the Shell with Shoes will tell us about loneliness, emancipation and rupture, drawing inspiration from the story of its two creators. In just over two minutes, the voice, the courage and the big sad eyes of this little shell already manage to bring us to tears.
