More effective than an energy drink, the performance of “Naatu Naatu” at the Oscars gave a boost to all those who stayed up late to see the presentations of statuettes. Two minutes and twenty seconds of live performance, all in choreography, costumes and energy: the sequence, which has already toured the world, honored Indian cinema, more precisely cinema in the Telugu language, a language spoken in two regions of south-eastern India. From the film RRR directed by SS Rajamouli, the music composed by MM Keeravani, performed by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, won the Oscar for Best Original Song , a first for an Indian song. Already awarded at the Golden Globes in the “Best Original Song” category, “Naatu Naatu” has met with real international success and has more than 126 million views on YouTube. Although the choreography is quite impressive, the popularity of “Naatu Naatu” is also linked to the success of the film RRR internationally, notably across the Atlantic where it met with success in theaters. The film is set in the 1920s when India is still a British colony and tells the story of a man who tries to save his sister kidnapped by a colonist, administrator Scott Buxton.
