NYC man wearing Halloween mask attacks female stranger with an ax

A man in a grinning Halloween mask used an ax to attack a stranger during an unprovoked confrontation on an Upper West Side street, police said Tuesday.

The attacker was wearing a grinning Halloween mask from the dystopian horror movie The Purge, about a fictional national holiday when all crime is legal for 12 hours.

The suspect, who has yet to be identified, approached the 51-year-old victim, the NYPD said.

“I don’t like you! I’m going to kill you!” the masked man screamed, before bringing the small ax down on the victim, striking him in the arm.

The 51-year-old victim and his wife were walking on Broadway between West 60th and 61st streets Monday when the masked man ran up to them around 10 pm.

The ax-wielding man then struck the victim on his left arm with the weapon, according to police.

A moment later the masked man ran off, cops said. He was last seen running toward the 59th St./Columbus Circle subway station and has not been caught.

The 51-year-old man was sent to Mt. Sinai Morningside with a deep cut in his left arm, police reported. He has since been treated and released.

Police released a photo of the suspect wearing the grinning mask and another photo of him wearing a blue face mask. Police described the suspect as a dark-skinned male who wore a blue mask, a dark-colored coat, blue jeans, and black boots.

Costumes from the hugely popular horror movie series were a coast-to-coast hit this Halloween, with Amazon offering more than 300 options and Good Housekeeping posting an online list of the 20 best “Purge” outfits for 2021.

The NYPD is asking for the public’s help identifying the ax-wielding man who is described as ‘a a dark-skinned male who wore a blue mask, a dark-colored coat, blue jeans, and black boots.’

Authorities asked anyone with information about the incident to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
