On Tuesday, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos opened fire at Robb Primary School in Uvalde, killing 21 students and adults. This umpteenth tragedy has plunged the inhabitants of Uvalde, Texas, and all of America back into a chronic nightmare. Calling for solidarity and appeasement, US President Joe Biden said he was “disgusted and tired” in the face of the horror of the shootings. “When, for God’s sake, are we going to face the gun lobby?” he exclaimed. Many personalities have since supported the victims, including Matthew McConaughey, from Uvalde. In an Instagram post, the American actor denounces the irresponsibility of citizens: “Once again, we have tragically proven that we were irresponsible for the rights our freedoms afford us.” He encourages citizens to make tangible changes to end the “epidemic” of mass shootings and urges them to wake up: “We cannot not expire once again, make excuses, and accept that this tragic reality is our status quo.” At the end of his post, the actor offers his support to the victims, in a final cry of despair: “No words can heal your loss. But if prayers can bring you comfort, we will let them speak.”
