The Golden Globes made their big comeback on television on Tuesday, hoping to turn the page on the scandals that have tarnished their image. Between an irreverent presenter, long speeches and the lingering shadow of Will Smith’s slap in the face at the last Oscars, strong moments marked this 80th ceremony, such as during the speech of the intimidating Michelle Yeoh. As often, the awarded celebrities have proved that they love to hear themselves talk: almost all the acceptance speeches have eaten away at the allotted time. The ceremony, which was supposed to last only three hours, finally exceeded the scheduled time by twenty minutes. The producers did try to dismiss the stars who dragged on thanks to a little melody played on the piano, but most continued their thanks as if nothing had happened. In this role, it is the Malaysian Michelle Yeoh who shone the brightest. Voted Best Actress in a Comedy for her role as a laundromat owner immersed in parallel universes in Everything Everywhere All at Once, she did not hesitate to pull out the bullying card. “Shut up,” she quipped, recalling the many fight scenes that punctuate the film. “I can screw you up, it’s serious.” Once by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan also won a second prize, that of Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Ke Huy Quan, who started his career as a child in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies.
