We’ve been talking about this project for weeks, and for good reason: it’s one of the most exciting of 2023 (along with Oppenheimer and Barbie). The return of Damien Chazelle, more than four years after First Man, is reason enough to be curious. Add to that that the director of La La Land wants to tackle a film on the golden age of Hollywood, with in particular Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. A rumor even mentioned a certain Tobey Maguire. You will understand the immense expectation. We now know a little more. We know, for example, the roles of two of the headliners, the first playing John Gilbert (one of the biggest stars of silent cinema, who never managed to convert to talkies), the second playing Clara Bow, very tall actress. Above all, Variety has confirmed that Tobey Maguire will be there, and not for just any role, since he will play Charlie Chaplin. The media reports having seen the first images of the film, titled Babylon, at CinemaCon, and describes this seen as a mix between The Great Gatsby and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. A mix that speaks to us quite a bit, and which should no doubt hit the mark at the next Oscars – we remember the destiny of The Artist. As a reminder, Robert Downey Jr., long before becoming Tony “Iron Man” Stark, had embodied Charlie Chaplin in a biopic released in 1992, and even left with a golden statue for his interpretation. The comparison between Tobey Maguire’s performance and that of RDJ thirty years earlier will be inevitable. Babylon will be released in theaters on January 23, 2023.
