2023 will mark the thirtieth year that our country has not won in the international film category. The last French film to have won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film was Indochine by Régis Wargnier, in 1993 and, over the past 12 years, only three films submitted by France have been selected to compete: Les Misérables by Ladj Ly, in 2020, Mustang by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, in 2016, and A Prophet by Jacques Audiard, in 2010.Faced with this observation, a reform of the selection of future films chosen to represent France at the Oscars was announced by the new Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul-Malak. The decree withdrew from the commission the ex officio members (Thierry Frémaux, Serge Toubiana and Véronique Cayla) who will henceforth be appointed by the Minister of Culture each year. The new commissions include two exporters (Grégoire Melin and Hengameh Panahi), two producers (Didar Domehri and Philippe Rousselet), two directors (Jacques Audiard and Michel Gondry) and an expert personality in the field of cinema (Ariane Toscan du Plantier). the 33 films that applied, here are the five feature films they shortlisted:A Plein temps by Éric GravelLes Pires by Lise Akoka and Romane GueretRevoir Paris by Alice WinocourSaint Omer by Alice DiopA beautiful morning by Mia Hansen-Love’s commission will meet on September 23, 2022 to audition the producer, the international seller, and if applicable, the US distributor (remotely) of each shortlisted film.
